Release notes
What shipped in each build of Camcorder, on the iPhone and on Apple TV, newest first. The same notes the app shows after an update.
iOS
-
Build 326
- Every device's channels reach your Apple TV
- An iPhone and an iPad on one iCloud now share one list, so a TV shows the channels made on both. A TV linked by a code may need scanning once more.
-
Build 323
- Lips and sound line up in a film on the web
- A clip's sound could play up to half a second early at a link and on a TV. Publish a film again to mend it: only its sound is sent.
- Camcorder for Apple TV shows your channels by itself
- On an Apple TV signed in to your iCloud, your own channels appear with no code to scan. Scanning the code still links anybody else.
-
Build 305, 309, 318
- Publish a film to the web, at a link
- Press share, then Publish. Anyone you send the link to can watch it in a browser, music and all. Change link or Take down from the same place.
- Channels: your own shelves of films
- Tick the channels a film goes on when you publish, or none. Each channel has its own link to hand out from the Channels page.
- Follow somebody's channel
- Open a channel link and press Follow: its films show on your Channels page, and the mark on home counts what you have not watched. Nobody is told who follows.
- A film opened from a link plays its music
- The note at the top right turns the music off and on. Your icon can show how many films you have not watched on channels you follow.
- An X calls off a film being made for sharing
-
Build 263
- Films on a TV at full size
- Connect a TV and the film plays there alone at the TV's full height, while the phone keeps every control. A cable keeps the sound in sync; AirPlay can lag.
- Open Camcorder from the Lock Screen
- Add it to the Lock Screen's buttons or Control Center (iOS 18), and a tap opens straight on the camera.
- One purchase unlocks sharing films
- Filming, watching and sharing nearby stay free. Sending a film out asks once for the Full Version; on TestFlight the purchase is a test one and costs nothing.
- Each step shows while a film is made
- A card fills a ring for the soundtrack and another for the film, so a long share says how far it has got, and the film holds still meanwhile.
-
Build 249
- The app is now called Camcorder
- The name under its icon was missing a letter. Nothing else changes: your films, moments and settings stay exactly as they were.
-
Build 247
- Keep a moment from any film
- Double tap the picture to heart a frame, then drag sideways to move it one frame at a time. The heart at the bottom opens them all, ready to save to Photos.
- Play the music along with your film
- Double tap the music knob and it records how you move it as the film plays. The performance stays with the film, even when you share it.
- Pinch the film to watch it full screen
- Everything else steps aside. Tap to pause, drag to scrub, and pinch in to come back.
- Upright however you hold it, and bigger on iPad
- Opening the app sideways no longer tips the camera, and the settings and the music knob turn with the phone. On iPad the picture and clips are larger.
-
Build 219
- Playing a finished film starts it again
- The play mark at the end of a film used to blink and do nothing on some films. It now rewinds and plays from the first clip.
-
Build 218
- Copy or move clips between your films
- Bringing clips in from another film, or starting a new film from the ones you chose, now asks whether to copy them or move them out.
- Everyone nearby has their own colour, and yours matches
- Your radar's sweep is drawn in your colour, the one your dot wears on other phones. A ring fills round the dot of whoever is bringing your clips in.
- The music's knob turns smoothly round the circle
- The guitar no longer jumps in loudness or tone between guitars, a change of key waits for the next bar, and the drums and harp hold their level as you turn.
- Clips you bring in play straight away
- A film used to stop where it ended before an import, even though the new clips were on the strip. It now plays and scrubs through them, from where you were.
-
Build 213
- Move clips between your films, and pick what to share
- Your other films are rows on the nearby page: tick a clip and the disc brings it in, without copying it. A chosen clip wears a white outline, and deleting asks first.
- Bluetooth headphones play the film's sound
- The film and its music both follow the headset now. They used to come out of the phone's own speaker whatever was connected.
- Music under your film, and a tap changes how it plays
- The ring around the play mark picks an instrument. Tap the lit mark for another of its five ways of playing, and the dots beside it show which one you are on.
- The camera keeps which way is up, and focuses as you zoom
- Stabilisation is on as you film. Turning to the selfie camera sideways no longer leaves you upside down, and zooming in now finds focus again by itself.
-
Build 186
- The film holds still while it is being shared
- The picture and its music pause while a share is put together, and carry on once it is ready.
- Sharing a film with music is much faster
- Most of all on a long film, where the wait used to grow with the length.
- The soundtrack follows the shape of your film
- It changes as it goes instead of repeating a few bars: a long film gets quieter and fuller stretches and a lift near the end.
- The numbers over the video while scrubbing are gone
-
Build 181
- Cutting a clip no longer happens by accident
- Hold the picture to open a cut and slide to aim it. The disc becomes scissors and makes the cut; the X at the top right puts it away.
- Nothing can be deleted while a lesson is showing
- A lesson used to mark one of your clips and turn the disc into a delete for a couple of seconds. That step is gone.
- Tap the video to pause and play it
- It used to take you back to the camera. The film also plays once now and stops on its last frame - tap it again to watch from the start.
- Bluetooth headphones and AirPods play the film's sound
- It used to come out of the phone's own speaker whatever was connected.
-
Build 153
- The app shows you its own gestures
- After your first clip a ghost hand does each one on the live picture. Touch the picture and it gets out of the way; the disc films straight through it.
- A lesson comes back until you have done it once
- Doing a gesture yourself retires its lesson, even if it was never shown to you.
- Stuck for a few seconds, and it offers something
- A gesture you have not tried arrives when nothing at all is happening, and never while you are filming or watching.
-
Build 149
- The camera is changed by the ring around the disc
- Turn it with a thumb; the glyph at the tick is the camera you are filming in.
- The camera says its name as you change it
- One word for a second, so a look can be asked for by name. Gone again at rest.
- The strip stays where you left it after a scrub
- It used to slide back, so the clip you scrubbed to was not the one you got.
- A cut can be called off with the phone turned
- Pull away from the picture in any direction. Held sideways there was nowhere to pull to, so a cut could not be abandoned at all.
-
Build 145
- Many films on one phone
- Home is a column of films. Tap the live camera at the top for a new one, tap a film to open it, hold a film to delete it.
- Scrolling home looks through every film on screen
- Each square scrubs as it crosses, so a film is found by its pictures rather than by its dates.
- Do not go back to an earlier build after this one
- Films are kept a new way. An older build cannot read them, and installing one could cost you what is on the phone.
-
Build 136
- Sharing a film is almost instant
- Clips filmed from this build on are copied rather than redrawn. A film with older clips in it still takes the long way round.
- A clip is kept even if the app is interrupted
- Footage is written as it records, so a call, a crash or a full disk leaves you what had already been filmed.
- Two white bars show where the volume buttons are
- They are there the whole time the camera is up, because those buttons zoom.
- A cut shows both halves side by side
- Two squares on the frame's middle line, the shorter half the smaller square.
-
Build 119
- Five more looks to film in
- Film, art, noir, rotoscope and comic, baked into the clip as you shoot it. There is no re-grading afterwards, and that is the point.
- One finger colours the picture, two push it further
- The whole square answers your hand, and what you see is what the clip records.
- Cut a clip in two, and delete either half
- Which is why there is no trim: a tail is a cut and a delete.
- Send clips to another phone nearby
- Phones in the room find each other, and what you take joins your film in the order it was filmed rather than the order it arrived.
-
Build 33
- Hold the disc to record, let go to stop
- Clips string together into one film in the order they were filmed. There is nothing to arrange afterwards.
- Tap the picture to focus, hold it to ride the light
- A sun comes up while your finger is on it, and goes as you lift off.
- The volume buttons zoom
- A tap steps in or out; holding one runs it.
- Double-tap the picture to turn the camera round
tvOS
-
Build 3
- Profiles: every phone that scanned the code
- The television keeps each one as a profile and shows one at a time, named top left. Remove one from the profiles page.
- Home shows the first film large
- A swipe moves one mode at a time across Mine, Following and Channels, and the tile grows into the film.
- Clicks and scrubbing that feel like a TV
- Click the right third for the next film and the left third to go back. Scrubbing follows your speed, and a swipe up shows the clips.
- Films play smoothly on a real television
- Pictures and pieces load near where you are and stay, and the score keeps time with the film.
-
Build 2
- Home: Mine, Following and Channels across the top
- Mine and Following are streams of every film, newest first, packed in squares of two sizes; Channels is the rows as before.
- The icon is the disc on black
- The same mark as the phone's app, and nothing else.
-
Build 1
- Camcorder on Apple TV
- The channels you follow, a row each, and their films at the television's full height. Click to play or pause, right for the next film.
- Link your phone by scanning a code
- The television shows a code; scan it with the phone's Camera and the TV shows your channels and the ones you follow.
